The Last Page

A reader discovers that the final page of an old novel contains a message written specifically for whoever finds the book.

The book had been sitting in the library for decades.

Its cover was faded and several pages were loose.

Emma found it on a shelf marked "Forgotten Books."

She took it home.

The story followed a traveler searching for a city that did not appear on any map.

Emma became absorbed.

Near midnight, she reached the final page.

There was no ending.

Instead, someone had written in pencil:

"If you are reading this, you are still looking."

Emma turned the page.

The back cover contained another sentence.

"The city is wherever you stop running."

The next morning, Emma returned to the library.

She asked the librarian about the book.

The librarian looked surprised.

"That book hasn't been borrowed in twenty-three years."

"Who wrote the note?"

The librarian shook her head.

Emma opened the book again.

The pencil writing was gone.

Every page was blank.

Only the cover remained.

Emma stared at it for a long time.

Then she smiled.

She finally understood the message.

Perhaps the book had never been trying to tell her where to go.

Perhaps it had been asking her whether she was happy with where she already was.
